Eco-friendly stadiums are the future of sports. AWL are building the future today with sustainable design that supports green initiatives to reduce waste consumption and emission pollution. In this article, we explore how green sports facilities work to save owners time and money and how this is achieved through architectural design.

Designing with Sustainability in Mind

As environmentally conscious stadium architects, we ensure the use of non-toxic materials and sustainable construction methods within our design projects to promote the following:

  • Low Pollution – sourcing appropriate sustainable, recyclable materialand incorporating these into the architectural design of the sports facility.
  • Water and Energy Preservation – conserving water and energy consumption by utilising renewable systems such as rainwater collection and reuse and solar and wind power as an alternative energy source.
  • Community Safety – understanding and implementing designs to reduce safety risksfor spectators and staff.
  • Financial Benefits – sourcing longer-lasting green materials that reduce maintenance costs as well as the cost of construction.

‘Greener’ Prefabricated Sports Facilities

Is sustainable stadium design really cost-effective? The answer is a resounding ‘yes’! From low maintenance, durable material to modern prefabrication techniques, there are many elements that we can incorporate into the architectural design of a sports venue that helps to reduce costs and save money.

Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) mean we can expedite the build process with resilient and versatile prefabricated modular installations. For example, check out the design and build of this Crusaders FC Belfast 600-capacity covered stand. AWL had the pleasure of working alongside the Construction Group on delivering this project in 2011, utilising state-of-the-art materials that reduced overall construction time and facilitated the immediate installation of the structure itself.

AWL’s Stadiums & Arenas Network

We are proud partners of sports facility experts who bring expertise, 21st-century technology, and creativity to ensure our clients’ projects are low-cost and delivered quickly and efficiently.

SPS Technology is one such partner who, with their namesake building material, allows us to incorporate a faster, greener construction solution into our stadia designs. SPS is entirely recyclable, arrives factory-finished and does not crack, spall, or rupture. With AWL’s experience in implementing the SPS composite system into high-profile stadium projects, we’ve helped our clients save up to 40% on the total cost of their builds compared with traditional materials!
